Health and Safety Policy for Storage Maze Hill
Storage Maze Hill is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, contractors, customers and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with storage, handling, moving, and related removal activities carried out on our premises and as part of our services.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance and to embed a positive safety culture across all areas of our operations, including storage facilities, loading areas and removal-related work.
Senior management is responsible for ensuring that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided to maintain high standards of health and safety. All employees are required to co-operate fully with this policy and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Legal Compliance and Standards
Storage Maze Hill will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and relevant industry guidance. We will monitor changes in legal requirements and accepted best practice, updating our procedures and training as needed to ensure ongoing compliance.
Where our activities overlap with transport and removals operations, we will adopt safe systems of work that align with recognised standards for lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and securing goods in transit.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the company management, who will ensure that effective arrangements are in place for planning, implementing, monitoring and reviewing this policy.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of health and safety measures, including conducting or assisting with risk assessments, providing instructions and ensuring that staff follow safe working practices.
Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and incidents promptly, and participate in required training. Contractors and visiting drivers are expected to co-operate with our site rules and any specific safety instructions relevant to loading, unloading and storage operations.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Control
We will carry out and maintain written risk assessments for our key activities, including storage operations, material handling, use of lifting equipment, working in loading bays and carrying out removal related tasks. The findings of these assessments will be communicated to staff and reviewed periodically or following any significant change in operations or an incident.
Risks will be controlled using a hierarchy of measures, starting with elimination or substitution of hazards where possible, followed by engineering controls, safe systems of work, and the use of personal protective equipment where necessary.
Safe Storage and Workplace Conditions
Storage areas will be designed and maintained to reduce the risk of falls, trips, collisions and manual handling injuries. Aisles and access routes will be kept clear, lighting will be maintained at suitable levels, and floors will be kept as clean and dry as reasonably practicable.
Racking, shelving and containers used for stored goods will be installed, inspected and maintained to prevent instability or collapse. Items will be stacked and stored so as to avoid overloading, unsafe heights or blocking of emergency exits and fire equipment.
Manual Handling and Lifting Operations
Handling and lifting items, whether within our storage facilities or as part of removal services, will be planned and managed to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. We will provide manual handling assessments where appropriate and ensure that heavier or awkward loads are handled using suitable mechanical aids or team lifting methods.
Employees will receive instruction on safe lifting techniques, awareness of personal limitations and the proper use of trolleys, pallet trucks, lifting devices and other equipment. Any lifting equipment will be inspected and maintained in accordance with relevant safety standards.
Vehicles, Traffic and Loading Areas
Where vehicles operate on or near our premises, including those used for removals and deliveries, we will manage traffic movements to reduce the risk of accidents. This may include designated loading zones, marked pedestrian routes, speed limits, and clear instructions for drivers and staff.
Loading and unloading operations will be supervised where appropriate. Care will be taken to ensure vehicles are securely parked and braked before loading or unloading, and goods will be loaded in a manner that maintains vehicle stability and security.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
We will maintain suitable fire detection, alarm and firefighting equipment as appropriate to the nature of our premises and the goods stored. Emergency exits will be clearly marked and kept unobstructed at all times.
Staff will receive information on fire evacuation procedures and the location of assembly points. Periodic drills may be conducted to ensure that all personnel are familiar with emergency arrangements. Any special considerations relating to stored materials will be taken into account in fire safety planning.
Training, Information and Supervision
All employees will receive induction training that covers general health and safety requirements, site rules, reporting procedures and emergency arrangements. Additional task-specific training will be provided for those involved in higher risk activities, such as operating mechanical handling equipment or carrying out removal work.
Supervision will be provided at levels appropriate to the competence of staff and the risks involved. Safety information, including signage and instructions, will be kept clear, up to date and easy to understand.
Welfare, Health and Wellbeing
We will provide suitable welfare facilities, including access to rest areas and sanitary facilities, to support the health and comfort of employees while at work. Attention will be given to managing work-related stress, fatigue and other wellbeing issues that may impact safety or performance.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, near misses, dangerous occurrences and health concerns arising from work activities must be reported promptly to management. We will maintain appropriate records and, where necessary, carry out investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Lessons learned from incidents will be communicated to relevant staff and used to improve our risk controls and working methods.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in our operations, legal requirements or best practice. We will monitor our performance through inspections, audits, feedback from employees and analysis of incident trends.
Storage Maze Hill is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety, recognising that safe operations are essential to delivering reliable storage and removal services for our customers.
